Other things this week

The Superbowl finish was quite exciting, I will own up tp napping during the Third and Fourth Quarters, but I woke up in time for the final two plays, which saw the Giants score a touchdown to win the game. I missed the pass that set it up, which has since been proposed as the Best Catch in Superbowl History. It was a good one, the Quarterback doing well to evade three tacklers and the receiver pinning the ball against his helmet, one-handed, as he fell. Here's a You Tube video of someone's TV who was watching the highlights (the only way to get round the NFL's copyright!). The replays from about 45 seconds onwards are what matter:

Lara should be safe in the car for our trip up to Radcliffe this weekend now, I bought a Dog Guard to go in the boot of the car to stop Mishka from jumping over the back seats from the boot. I've been assured by the firm I bought it from, and from their advert on eBay, that this will fit in our CRV. I'm not convinced, the box reckons we need an extension unit for 4x4s... I'm going to fit it tonight so we'll see who's right.

We're very much looking forward to our road trip this weekend, but the car is going to be very full! Even more so for the last hour or so on the way home, as we're calling in at Swindon to pick up a big play-rug we bought on eBay for the nursery. At 2.4m x 1.6m it's going to take some room in the boot with Mishka, even when it's rolled up!

Things I still don't like - BUSES!

Last night should have been cricket nets night. I missed it last week so I was all set to go last night, not even the England v Switzerland game was going to make me miss it. I checked the bus timetable - the 800 due to pass through Marlow about 1715, so I got to the bus stop at probably 1714, having walked for three or four minutes along the route of the bus, without it passing me.
Anyway, sure enough, no sign of it! 3 buses went the other way in the 50 minutes I was waiting until the next bus arrived (10 minutes late...). Suffice it to say I was very cold and annoyed by the time I got home at 6.20, rather than 5.30. I would have to leave home at 7pm to make the start of nets, and I just couldn't face rushing to make tea, eat it and get changed, nevermind spend some time with Olga and Lara. As it happens Olga had made me anyway, bless her cotton socks, but I just wasn't in the mood and sat down to play with Lara and watch the game anyway. I was thinking of composing a rude and sarcastic email to the boss of Arriva, but after a large whiskey and once the footy started, I couldn't be bothered to do that either. Next time, Mr Arriva!!

Just to rub it in, this morning, as I was driving to work, the morning bus to Marlow pulled out in front of me from my stop (absolutely dead on time to the minute, it had been 5 minutes late when I got it yesterday morning) and crawled up the hill at 10 mph. If I'd not nipped past it round Handy Cross roundabout, I'd have been stuck behind it most of the way to Marlow! They annoy me when I need to use them and even now have annoyed me when I don't need to use them!! Arrgghhhhh.

Weight and Jabs update

We both took Lara to the GP today to get her weighed and give her her first 2 of 7 jabs. She's up to 10lbs 8 oz now, which means she's put 8oz on in a week, which is better than expected. We measured her the other night and she's 58cm long, which is longer than an 8 week old should be, and technically we should only be gauging her against 5 week old babies, so we reckon she's going to be tall!
I held her for the jabs, after the nurse had given me suitable instructions on the best way to hold her, with that expression that women who regularly hold babies have for men who don't. Let's see her open a new jar of pickled onions or something, eh, fellas!?
Anyway, she was very brave (Lara, not the nurse) and only soon stopped crying after the injections (or was it because I gave her back to Olga?).

Half-time, NY Giants 3 - 7 NE Patriots

Well, it's Superbowl night, and I do like watching the build-up and the kick off, but tonight it's even quite exciting to watch the game, and I did make the effort to buy some hot dog sausages and buns, so I'm seeing how long I can last. The half-time show is by Tom Petty, I wouldn't have been able to name any of his songs until he started singing "American Girl", which I recognised, but that's been it so far. Not a patch on the 2002 Superbowl, which had U2 singing Beautiful Day with a big screen behind them, scrolling up the names of the victims of 9/11. I liked that so much I bought the DVD of that Superbowl on eBay!
We had a lovely time at Ant'n'Bec'n'Eve's yesterday afternoon for Anton's birthday, although being beaten by the Welsh at rugby took the shine off. At least Liverpool won!
Betweem Olga, Lucy and me we blitzed the housework today, so the place is looking vaguely presentable. Just in time for Mishka to decide to rip up his favourite towel and leave shreads of it all over the place.

Oh, one thing I learnt today - it's Pancake Day on Tuesday. They've kept that quiet. The shelves in Tesco Express were still fully stocked with batter mix and lemon juice, so I stocked up on a couple of packets of mix. At least it doesn't mean I have to think of what will be for dinner on Tuesday!

Tom Petty's played three more songs and I might have recognised one of them. Am I too old? Looking at him, I'm probably not old enough!
